  • !Find it hard to stop gambling or control how much they gamble
  • !Feel anxious, irritable, or restless when trying to stop gambling
  • !Gamble to escape problems, relieve stress, or cope with negative emotions
  • !Lie to family or friends about how much they gamble
  • !Chase losses by returning to gamble again after losing money
  • !Borrow money, sell possessions, or commit fraud to fund gambling
  • !Neglect work, study, family, or personal needs because of gambling
  • !Experience relationship breakdowns or conflicts due to gambling
  • !Feel guilt, shame, or depression after gambling
  • !Need to gamble with increasing amounts to achieve the same excitement
  • !Have repeated unsuccessful efforts to cut back or stop gambling

If any of these apply to you or someone you know, please reach out for help. The National Gambling Helpline is free, confidential, and available 24/7 on 1800 858 858.

Is Gambling Becoming a Problem?

Ask yourself these questions honestly:

  • 1Do you spend more than you can afford to lose?
  • 2Do you feel the need to bet with increasing amounts of money?
  • 3Have you tried to cut back on gambling but found you couldn't?
  • 4Does gambling cause problems in your relationships, work, or finances?
  • 5Do you chase losses by continuing to bet after losing?

If you answered yes to any of these, consider reaching out for support.

Tips for Responsible Gambling

  • Set a budget before you bet — and stick to it
  • Never chase losses
  • Don't gamble when stressed, depressed, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Take regular breaks and set time limits
  • Balance gambling with other activities and interests
  • Use deposit, loss, and time limits offered by bookmakers

Setting Limits

All licensed Australian bookmakers are required to offer limit-setting tools. Using these tools is one of the most effective ways to stay in control of your gambling.

Deposit Limits

Set a maximum amount you can deposit into your betting account over a daily, weekly, or monthly period. Once the limit is reached, you cannot deposit more until the next period. Decreasing your deposit limit takes effect immediately; increasing it has a cooling-off period.

Loss Limits

Set a maximum net loss over a specified period. When you reach your loss limit, you will be unable to place further bets until the period resets.

Wagering Limits

Set a maximum total amount you can wager (stake) over a period, regardless of whether those bets win or lose.

Time Limits & Activity Statements

Set session time reminders so you are alerted after a specified period of activity. You can also request activity statements from your bookmaker showing your gambling history, net wins/losses, and time spent.

Take a Break / Cool-Off Period

Most bookmakers allow you to temporarily suspend your account for a set period (e.g., 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month). During this time, you cannot log in or place bets.

Contact your bookmaker directly or visit their responsible gambling page to set up these limits. If you need help, call 1800 858 858.
